Ellen Lyon recently announced the publication of her first book, “The Stress-less Lamb - Conversations Between the Lamb and the Shepherd.”

A resident of South Burlington, Lyon is well known to many residents as manager of the former Redeemed Thrift Shop on Williston Road for nine years.

A graduate of Wesley Junior College and West Virginia Wesleyan College, Lyon went on to earn her masters in Christian ministry with a focus on pastoral care at Wilson University. She also received certification from the Apostolic School of Theology, under the umbrella of Hope International University.

Since 1982, Lyon has served in her local United Pentecostal Church assemblies in both Lexington Park, Md. and Burlington. Since moving to Vermont in 2001, her husband Paul Lyon has been pastor of the Burlington United Pentecostal Church.

The genesis of Lyon’s book began as a research paper for her Soteric Counseling Certification. The paper’s theme was dealing with stress from a spiritual standpoint.

“I’d always wanted to write a book,” said Lyon. “When I saw that this topic is of interest to many people, it seemed to be very worthwhile to develop.”

The 130-page paperback contains Lyon’s personal experiences along with teachings from the Old and New Testament. Its purpose is two-fold explained the author.

“Learning how to handle stress when deadlines and financial pressures loom, is a welcome respite,” said Lyon. “And second, learning how God desires to be a part of one’s life is made evident by His efforts to relate to us on a personal basis.”

Noting “the Bible can be intimidating and appear complex,” Lyon shared that “The Stress-less Lamb” simplifies many of its teachings. “It is a book that is beneficial for personal devotions as well as a group study guide.”

Lyon used her acrylic paintings in black and white at the introduction to each chapter, and also designed the cover art.

“The fun part was using photographs that my son, John, and I took,” said Lyon. “The water, sky and trees are from pictures taken at Technology Park in South Burlington.”

“The Stress-less Lamb” is self-published, printed at REPRO in Winooski, under Lyon’s Word of Light Publishing mark. According to the author, it is the first of a series. Lyon said the next book will be about “how to deal with guilt from a Christian perspective.”
